Tomorrow's Gold U18 Development Camp:

The WRPC are running an U18 Development Camp to be held at Epworth on the 9/10th October.  The weekend will include a technical breakdown of the rowing stroke including video analysis plus a number of different trainings.  Email Andrea for nomination forms. andreaharper@rowingnz.com

Coach Conference:

The Associations and WRPC Coaches Conference is ready to kick off next weekend 11/12th September at the Armitage Hotel, Tauranga.  Get your registrations in asap to andreaharper@rowingnz.com.  The conference line up is as follows:

  • How to make a fast boat - Dave Thompson (Elite NZ Coach)
  • Developing an athlete U15-U20 - David Mayes (Plan2Train)
  • Strength and Conditioning Practical - Dan Smart (NZ Academy of Sport Trainer)
  • Why is 'core' so important - Craig Newlands (NZ Academy physiotherapist)
  • What are NZ selectors looking for? - Jude Hamilton (NZ Rowing Selector)
  • Changes to the NZ Coach Education Program - Kevin Strickland (NZ Domestic Rowing) 

Cost is $70 per person if registered before Wednesday 8th September, $75 after Wednesday.

Junior World Championships:

The NZ Juniors have finished their racing at the Junior World Championships in Racice.  Congratulation to all crews and also for overcoming the bug that managed to creep its way into the camp.  Results are as follows:

Women's Four - Gold (WRPC Region-Coach Garry Roberts, Waikato Dio)

Men's Quad - Bronze (WRPC Region-Chris Morrison, Ryan Goodson)

2010 NZ World Championship Crews Announced: 

Congratulations to all WRPC athletes who have been selected to represent NZ at the 2010 World Championships. NZ Rowing has selected 18 boats and 55 athletes to represent New Zealand at the 2010 Championships to be held at Lake Karapiro 31st October - 7th November.  17 WRPC athletes have been selected, the largest number of all the RPC's.

NZ Junior athletes perform with distinction at Racice:

The NZ Junior athletes have raced their heats at the Junior World Championships and are now progressing through to semi and A finals.  Below are the results from the heats of the athletes from the WRPC region.  See www.rowingnz.com for further details.

WRPC Athlete Celebration Function:

On Saturday the 14th August at 6.30pm the WRPC are putting on a celebration function for their athletes after their successful International Campaigns.  The Function will be held at the Don Rowland's Community Centre at Lake Karapiro.  We would like to invite all Clubs and their members within the WRPC region. If you would like to join in the celebration please contact andrea on andreaharper@rowingnz.com.

 

WRPC Trial Nomination:

All athletes wanting to trial for the WRPC on September the 18th need to have nominations in by the 13th August to andreaharper@rowingnz.com or you can click on the nomination tab at the top of the page. 

 

WRPC Winter Performance Camp 3:

The WRPC held its third Winter Performance Camp for athletes wanting to trial for the RPC on September 18th.  The camp focused on the technical aspect of creating the peak of the power in a rowing stroke during the front half of the stroke.  This was reinforced by Jenni Coker (NZ Rowing Biomechanist).  Jenni did a presentation to all athletes on Saturday night with regards to how different technical sequencing produce different power curves and what the correct power curve is that we are looking.

NZ U23's produce 6 Finals plus 2 silver medals:

The New Zealand U23's raced over the weekend in Brest Belarus and the athletes came away with 6 Finals and 2 silver medals.  Zoe Stevenson and Hayley Hoogeveen put their training to the test with their team mates to produce a fast paced race in the womens eight.  The girls came away with second place, a great effort in which they can be very proud of.  Julia Edwards in the womens lightweight double with team mate Lucy Strack (Southern RPC) produced a great race coming back from fourth place to work their way into the Silver medal position as they crossed the finish line.  Great work from all athletes.

Coaches Conference 11th/12th September:

The Waikato RPC in conjunction with the Bay of Plenty and Waikato Rowing Associations are putting on a Coaches Conference for this region.  The Conference will be held in the Armitage Hotel, Tauranga on Saturday 11th September and Sunday 12th September. The conference will run 9-5pm on Saturday with a drinks and nibbles evening from 6pm and 10-1pm on Sunday.The conference will cover a number of topics based around ‘how to make a fast boat’. The cost of the conference will be $70 if registered before the Wednesday 8th September, $75 after this date.

Lucerne World Cup 3:

The 3rd World Cup Series was held in Lucerne over the weekend.  New Zealand's Elite athletes had an outstanding regatta winning 3 Gold, one Silver and 2 Bronze medals.  Congratulations once again to Eric Murray on his outstanding performance in the men's pair.  Eric and his pair partner Hamish Bond (Southern RPC) have now completed 2 International seasons without being beaten.  Also well done to David Eade and his silver medal performance with his teammates in the Men's four.

 

U21 Youth Cup:

The U21 NZ Youth Cup team landed in Australia on a mission and finished up winning 15 Golds, 3 Silver & 2 Bronze medals over the 3 days of racing.  Western Australia & South Australia next on the medal table with 2 golds each.  Well done to the following WRPC region athletes and coaches; 

Tyna Williams, Mike Berry, Rob McCaig, Andrew Healey, Regan Barkla, Toby Cunliffe Steel, Lana Davison, Adam Ling and Duncan Bydeley, Mike Gilbert (Coaches).

Points table was NZ 121 points, NSW, 82, Queensland 80, WA 77, VIC 65, TAS 57, SA 54, ACT 40.

Winter Performance Camp 2 (June):

The second of the WRPC Winter Performance Squad camps was held 19/20th June.  25 school leaver aged potential RPC trialists attended the camp at Epworth.  The camp was based around video analysis of athletes whilst out on the water, all athletes will recieve a breakdown of themseleves on DVD.  Athletes were also introduced to a number of different and new technical exercises including 'throw aways' which seemed to be the popular one amongst the group.  Margaret (instructor from the local Cambridge Gym) also came along to put the athletes through an intense yoga stretch session. (see the picture tab for photographs). 

Thanks again to all coaches and helpers for creating another very successful camp.  Next camp is the 24/25th July.

Congratulations to the WRPC athletes and team:

New Zealand National Championships brought a number of titles and successes to the WRPC.  Including Andrew Healey recieving his first Red Coat, Julia Edward and Julia Trautvetter recieving their first Gold Coats and the Mens Premier eight storming across the finish line in first place ahead of rivals Southern RPC clocking a time of 5.35.29.

The overall medal count for our 28 athletes was:

7 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze
